Shankar Tiwari

I'm a software engineer at Cayuse. I work on grants and research-compliance software in Java and React, and I've been writing web apps for a bit over ten years.

Outside work I build browser applications: an interactive data visualisation, 3D scenes in three.js, two games, and a few planning tools. Each project below links to a live version and its source on GitHub (opens in new tab).

Projects

California Drought Impact (opens in new tab) 2016, rebuilt 2026

This began as my research-assistant job at Cal State Fullerton. Yoon Chung Han designed it as a data artwork, with laser-cut sculptures, projection mapping and a D3 page. I wrote the code, and we showed it at ISEA 2017 in Manizales, Colombia.

This year I rebuilt the page. The 2016 version had a single storage snapshot, September 2014, with a lot of blanks. The new one has monthly storage for 34 reservoirs from October 2011 to September 2026, pulled from CDEC, on a 3D relief of California where a low lake shrinks and shows its bathtub ring. The data needed the most fixing: months missing on CDEC, capacities that had been revised since 2016, and two flood-control basins on the Santa Ana River that are kept nearly empty on purpose and had to come out of the totals.

Games

Floodlit Football (opens in new tab) 2026

A top-down football game with a 20-club league over 38 rounds. The ball has height, so crosses and corners go up on an arc and bend, and keepers come off their line to claim them. Offside is judged at the moment of the pass. A close call freezes on the line and tells you the margin in centimetres.

Between matches you run the club: training, stamina, injuries, contracts, and transfers from five regions. It ships as one HTML file, built from source, with Playwright suites for the phone controls and for who you control when the ball changes hands.

Journeys in 3D

Spiritual Traveller (opens in new tab) 2026

A slow pilgrimage from Pune to Bhimashankar, Shirdi, Tirumala, Kedarnath and Badrinath. You go by motorbike, taxi, autorickshaw and the overnight train, then walk the last 16 km to Kedarnath. At each temple the journey stops for darshan.

The roads and trains follow the real ones, down to the crash barriers on the ghat roads. Most of the test suite is about keeping one small figure believable: it rides every leg four ways, at desktop and phone size, and checks each frame that the traveller isn't floating, sunk into the road or hidden behind something.

iMedRIS Data Corporation, software engineer, Redlands. IRB and conflict-of-interest software used by 200+ institutions.
  • 2017
OpsRamp, intern, San Jose. D3 charts for network-device health.
  • 2016
DreamWorks Animation, R&D data analytics intern. Tools to collect and chart production workload metrics.
  • 2016
Cal State Fullerton, research assistant. The drought project above.
  • 2013–14
